Travis dropped to his knees, his heart pounding in his throat. Elena had managed to prevent one of the men from killing him, but the blood seeping through the front of her coat told a dire story about her own survival. He pressed his hands on her chest, trying to stifle the bleeding from her wound, looking over his shoulders, trying to find something, anything, that would help him to save her. There were no medical supplies that he’d seen, but he had to try. “Hold on, Elena.”

He continued to press on the wound on her chest, his mind racing, the perspiration collecting on his forehead. If he could just get her to one of the trucks, maybe he could drive to the next town and get some help.

She looked up, her eyes focused on him. She grabbed the sleeve of his coat in her fist. “Travis,” she whispered, her voice barely louder than a hiss. “You have to find the list. Get it to safety. Get it back to the United States or destroy it before more lives are lost.”

He set his jaw, leaning close to her, his eyes searching her face. “Don’t you give up, Elena! Don’t you leave me!” He stood up, wiping the blood from her wound on the front of his coat. “Give me a second. I’m gonna get one of these old blankets. I’ll wrap you up. We’ll take one of those trucks and get you help.”

Travis ran to the corner of the barn where the fire was still smoldering, snagged one of the blankets, and ran back to Elena. It didn’t take more than a few seconds. He was sure of it.

But by the time he returned, her eyes were closed.

She was gone.

Travis dropped to his knees, grief overwhelming him. “Elena, stay with me!” He pressed his fingers to her neck trying to find a pulse. Nothing. He tried again in another spot. Maybe he was just pressing too hard. He tried the other side of her neck. Still nothing. He tapped her cheek, frantically trying to rouse her. “Elena, Elena. Wake up! Stay with me.”

After a moment, Travis hung his head, the sadness overwhelming him. There was no doubt about it, she was gone. Still on his knees, he closed his eyes, his body leaning over Elena’s as the life left her. He sat in silence for a moment, then shook his head, standing up, feeling a void open in his chest the size of a black hole.

Travis stared at the scene around him. The three intruders were dead, but so was Elena. There was no life left in the barn, only death and cold. Outside, the wind was still whistling, though based on what he saw out of the window, the snow had stopped, the thick clouds overhead blowing away off in the distance.

Elena was gone. His reason for being in Ukraine was dead. He was stuck in an abandoned barn with nothing to show for it except for a loss of life.
